The Tessellation print project has come to Tucson! This project weaves the printmaking undercurrents together in the Southwest, United States, through the EXQUISITE TESSELLATION Print project -- a new twist on the Surreal Exquisite Corpse game.
Started in Albuquerque, by Krrl Whitaker, the project has expanded to El Paso, TX, is now in Tucson,AZ. The project passes out "hat" linoleum tiles to printmakers-- and asking artists to carve an image. Then we piece the linocuts together to make collaborative tessellation prints at events, galleries, and studios throughout the southwest. The leads in this project are Karl Whitaker in Albuquerque, Manuel Guerra in El Paso and Joseph Marshall in Tucson.
Most innovative perhaps, is that this particular "hat" shape will tessellate infinitely without ever making a regular pattern. It has only been known to the world for about two years (the shape is called an "Aperiodic Monotile"). We cut the tiles out with a laser cutter, very contemporary, to insure that they will all be the same.
This initiative is a continuation of our previous print projects, like the Desert Triangle Print Carpeta, and the Ambos Lados International Print Exchange. Our EXQUISITE TESSELLATION Print project is more interactive and intimate -- a "hands on" approach to integrating our regional printmaking talents.
We have handed out nearly two dozen blocks with artists from The Drawing Studio, and staff from the UofA Museum of Art and many talented printmakers from Tucson. So this is a call to Tucson area artists even if you are not a printmaker to get on board and particpate in this great community project.
